Chintamani Kar Bird Sanctuary, Near Kolkata – A centre for ecotourism

Just a driving distance from the metropolis of Kolkata, the Chintamani Kar Bird Sanctuary is a centre for ecotourism where huge varieties of butterflies, birds, ferns, epiphytes and orchids find their refuge.  Located to the west of the Netaji Subhas Road, which connects Garia with Baruipur in the Rajpur area this sanctuary lies close to the Ramkrishna Mission Institute in Narendrapur.

The place was previously known as “Kayaler Bagan,” and was recognized as a sanctuary in the year 1982 and was given the name of Narendrapur Wildlife Sanctuary on September 8, 2004.

What to see at Chintamani Kar Bird Sanctuary: Chintamani Kar Bird sanctuary is the home of a number of bird species, which include Common Hawk Cuckoo, Streak-throated Woodpecker, Emerald Dove, Crested Serpent Eagle, White-throated Fantail and Large-tailed Nightjar and many more.

Some rare species include Tickell’s Thrush, Slaty-legged Crake, Scarlet-backed Flowerpecker, Scaly Thrush, Little Spiderhunter, Grey-headed Fish Eagle and Blue-throated Flycatcher. Moreover, the sanctuary is also a home to a number of small wildlife, like civet cat, jungle cat, jackal, monitor lizard and others.

Since the site of the sanctuary was an abandoned orchard, the place is also dotted with a number of trees of coconut palm, jackfruit, guava, tamarind, ficus and others.

How to go ?

It is situated in the district of South 24-Pgs of West Bengal. The site lies close from the Rathtala Bus stop. EM Bypass is the ideal route to follow for reaching the destination. The sanctuary is located at a distance of 10 km. from Ruby General Hospital. Auto-rickshaws and buses are also found from Garia. You can also travel on private buses that halt at Rathtala.

Where to stay ?

Its preferable to take your own food. There are no lodging facilities at the Bird Sanctuary. It is best for day trips.
