Purbasthali, South Bengal – The birds watchers will thoroughly enjoy here

A small town Purbasthali is just 120 km from Kolkata. It is located in the district of Bardhaman, between Katwa and Nabadwip. This town perches on the banks of a beautiful oxbow lake that is created by the River Ganga. The length of the lake is 2 to 3 km and it attracts lots of migratory birds during the winter season. The birds-watchers will thoroughly enjoy here. Purbasthali also known as chupir chor, is covered with fruits and flower garden and profuse vegetation. The place is too small to allot tourism but it is littered with many Zamindar palaces.

Places to see at Purbasthali: There is a small oxbow lake by the side of the Ganga and is known for its clear water and heavy growth of sweet water plants. This lake attracts a lot of migratory birds during the winter months and becomes a favourite place for bird watchers. Besides, there are some fruit and flower gardens to check out for.

Nearby attractions Purbasthali: There are some places of attractions like Nabadwip, Krishnanagar and Mayapur located nearby. Nabadwip is famous as the birth place of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, a Hindu Saint and also as a onetime great seat of learning in Bengal. Mayapur is the headquarters of ISKCON.

Things to do Purbasthali: You can enjoy boat ride on the clear water of the lake. The water is so transparent that you can see the underwater vegetation for a long distance.

Best time to visit Purbasthali: The best time to visit the place is during the winter months of October to February. You must go for bird watching either during the early mornings or late afternoon.

How to go ?

Purbasthali is located towards the north of Kolkata and you need travel till Krishnangar. From there, you have to cross the Chaitanya Bridge over the Hooghli River to reach Nabadwip. Follow the same road that will take you to Purbasthali Bazar and a right turn from the railway station will take you behind the station from where, after a drive for sometime, you will reach the place where boats are available. You can also visit Purbasthali by taking a direct train from Howrah heading towards Katwa. It would take around 2.5 hours to reach Purbasthali Station. Catch a rickshaw from the station to reach the Chupir Chor area.
