Nako, Himachal Pradesh – This is a fairyland in Kinnaur district named after the picturesque Nako lake

Located along the Tibet border, at an altitude of 2950 m, Nako is a small hamlet in Kinnaur district of Himachal Pradesh. It is an important pilgrimage of the Buddhists. The place shares its name with the lake which is also named as Nako. This picturesque lake forms the boundary of the village. As per the popular belief, the site is the heavenly realm of fairies. You will prominently find the footprints of these fairies in the nearby caves. This picturesque location consists of the green paddy fields and the houses are traditional mud houses.

Nako Monastery

The monastery stands at the western edge of this little village. The simple outside appearance will surprise you completely with its contrasting intricate sculptures inside. There are total four temples of which the two temples are of prime importance here, the Main temple and the Upper temple. These two temples are considered the oldest of the structures, still preserving their original clay sculptures, murals and ceiling panels. The main and the largest temple temple is also known as the Translator’s Temple. This is the oldest monument in the village too. The third structure in the monastery is the Small White temple, though almost broken, is worth a visit for its wonderful wooden door-frame depicting the different scenes of the Life of the Buddha carved over it. The fourth structure is almost of the equal size of the Upper Temple and is situated beside. The temple is today known as the Temple of Wide Proportions.

Nako lake

An oval shaped lake, Nako lake is encircled with mountains, valley and whitewashed village thus making it a picturesque spot. The tourists can enjoy boating in the summer season here along-with the marvellous scenic beauty. In winter this frozen lake makes an ideal base for ice skating.

By Air

The nearest airport is at Shimla. Shimla airport is connected to Delhi and Kullu. Taxis are easily available from Shimla to Nako.

By Rail

Nearest railway station is also Shimla and it is around 283 km from Nako. Taxis are available from here to Nako.

By Road

Daily buses and regular taxi services are available from Shimla and Rampur to Nako. You can also reach Nako from Lahaul and Spiti.  Malling Nullah near Nako on the route is landslide prone.
