Uttaranchal, with Tibet to the north and Nepal to the east, is equally bifurcated into two historic regions of Garhwal and Kumaon. Lying in the east, Kumaon rests at its heart, with the magnificent sight of the great Himalayas, the tree-covered Binsar wildlife sanctuary and the Khali Estate.

Khali-EstateThe Mountain Resort popularly known as Khali Estate is located in the Binsar Wild life Sanctuary near Ayarpani village in Almora district of Uttaranchal.  Situated on the top of a hill, the Resort is shrouded by pine and oak forest over looking the panoramic and the majestic snow clad mountains of the central Himalayas. The peaks like Nanda Devi (25645 ft.), Nanda Ghunti, Trishul, Badrinath (Chaukhambha), Kedarnath, Gangotri, Shivling, Bandar punch, Kamet, Nanda Kote etc. are visible from the resort.

The Mountain Resort is situated at an altitude of 2000 meters (6600ft.) above sea level. It is 22 km. by motor road, north of Almora town. All types of vehicles including buses, cars and jeeps can easily come right up to the Resort. This resort is founded by Sir Henry Ramsay after he retired from the services. Though a native of England he did not made his return there. Instead his Home now was 25 virgin acres of Khali. The serenity of the estate even attracted Mahatma Gandhi who established an Ashram named Shail Ashram which existed for five years.

It is true that some  paradise are made to be lost. This beautiful mountain resort is now visited by very few tourists and is almost losing its identity as a holiday destination.

Nearby Attractions at Khali Estate:  The Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary inside which the mountain resort is located is the nearest visiting spot from the Khali Estate. It provides shelter to the numerous species of  wild animals.

Places to see at Khali Estate: Almora, just 20 km from Khali Estate can be visited from here.

Things to do at Khali Estate: You can just stand and stare or stroll through the 25 acres of Khali, watch the splendid view of the sunrise and the sunset, or simply relax in the peaceful serene atmosphere.  If you want to sit back at the Khali Estate then there are  several options provided by the resort that you will enjoy without getting bored.

You can enjoy playing the indoor games like, Badminton, Table Tennis and Lawn Tennis and also other games here. If you are a nature lover you would be enchanted to see varieties of wild flowers & plants while taking a stroll through the 25 acres of Khali Estate. Rhododendrons, pine, oak and cedar, you would see them all if you choose to go for a jungle walk.

This place is also a delight for the bird watchers and the shutter bugs. You may catch the glimpse of  a wide variety of birds starting from wood peckers to the majestic Himalayan magpie. Keep a keen eye on the camera to click at the right moment. A short trek to a nearby village is also a great idea. You can sip hot tea prepared by the villagers and talk to them to know more about their culture and way of life. Bonfires are also arranged in the Resort premises in the evenings and on special occasions folk songs, as well as dances are also arranged.

Trekking: The Khali Estate also organizes treks, to the different regions of Kumaon himalayas like Pindari Glacier, Pindari/Kafni Glacier, Nanda Devi Base Camp , Milam Glacier, Roop Kund, Panchachuli Glacier, Saryu RamGanga, GauriGangaValley,  Ralam Glacier.

Best time to visit Khali Estate:  You can visit the estate throughout the year. The place changes its scenic beauty according to the seasons thus welcoming the tourist with different attires.

How to go ?

By Road

From Delhi via Moradabad, Rampur, Rudrapur, Haldwani, Kathgodam, Bhowali, Garampani, Almora. Beyond Almora the route turns through Kasardevi, Kaparkhan, Binsar Santuary gate to Mountain Resort (Khali Estate).

Alternatively:

From Delhi via Moradabad, Tanda, Bilaspur, Kaladhungi, Nainital, Bhowali Garampani, Almora. Beyond Almora the route turns through Kasardevi, Kaparkhan, Binsar Santuary gate to Mountain Resort (Khali Estate).

By Rail

By Ranikhet Express from Delhi to Kathgodam. From Kathgodam, car journey of 3.5 hours to Khali Estate.

The route from Kathgodam to Khali Estate is via Kathgodam, Bhowali, Garampani, Almora. Beyond Almora the rote turns through Kasardevi, Kaparkhan, Binsar Santuary gate to Mountain Resort.

KHALI ESTATE IS LOCATED INSIDE THE BINSAR WILD LIFE SANCTUARY. KINDLY NOTE THAT THE BINSAR WILD LIFE SANCTUARY BARRIER GATE, CLOSES AT SUNSET AND OPENS AT SUNRISE.
