Falta, South Bengal – An ideal weekend tourist destination on the banks of River Hooghly

Falta is just 51 km from Kolkata on the banks of River Hooghly. History is filled in the air of Falta, this place is an ideal tourist destination. The British took refuge here after Nawab Siraj Ud Daulah captured Kolkata and the Dutch had a factory here long before Indian Independence. But much before that, about 1000 years ago Tamluk near Falta was a renowned Buddhist centre. Falta can be appropriately be called a river town, just few kilometers to the south of Falta, River Damodar meets River Hooghly (River Ganges is called by this name here) and few kilometers to the north River Rupnarayan meets River Hooghly. Beside the riverside beauty, the beautiful farmhouse of the famous Bengali scientist Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose is also located here. Falta also plays host to business guests and it falls under SEZ (Special Economic Zone).

Places to see at Falta: The whole of Falta town has grown along the banks of River Hooghly. There are parks and walkways all along the river bank for you to enjoy your long-cherished evening walks along the river banks. The Bose Bigyan Mandir is the farmhouse of Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose. It is a beautiful farmhouse with a lovely garden and lots of trees.

Picnics are also allowed on the grounds of this farmhouse. You can visit the Falta Jetty and watch the ferries carrying passengers the whole day. However,  the best thing to do in Falta is to take long walks along the riverside.

Nearby attractions of Falta: Diamond Harbour is only half hour’s drive from Falta and Raichak can be reached in minutes. The riverside towns of Gadiara and Geonkhali are located on the other side of the river and take less than an hour. You can also visit the riverside town of Nurpur, just 30 mins from Falta. The historic town of Tamluk in East Midnapore on the bank of River Rupnarayan is also not far and so is the Industrial town of Haldia.

Things to do at Falta: You can spend your evenings taking long walks along the coast of River Hooghly, take a boat ride on Ganges from Falta or arrange a picnic in any spot along the river bank. Bird watching and village walks are other activities to enjoy in Falta.

Best time to visit: Falta can be visited anytime of the year. It is a nice weekend river destination for a family getaway.

How to go ?

Falta is located on the banks of River Hooghly around 51 kms from Kolkata. If you are availing public transport then take the bus SD9 or SD9/1 from Esplanade heading towards Nurpur. Another bus SD14 leaves from Taratolla and also reaches Falta. If you are availing train, then you have to get down at Diamond Harbour Station and catch a minibus to Falta. Most buses and trekkers from Diamond Harbour would reach Nainnan More. From Nainnan More (Crossing), you would get shared Auto Rickshaws to reach the hotels.
