Baranawapara Wildlife Sanctuary, Chattisgarh – A true delight for the wildlife lovers

Baranawapara Wildlife Sanctuary is located in the northern part of Mahasamund district of Chhattisgarh. This is one of the finest and important wildlife sanctuaries in the region. This sanctuary was established in 1976 under Wildlife Protection Act of 1972. It is relatively a small one covering an area of only 245 sq km. The sanctuary rests over a flat and hilly terrain with altitudes ranging between 265-400 mts. The Barnawapara Wildlife Sanctuary is known for its lush green vegetations and unique wildlife.

The varieties of wildlife available in Barnawapara Sanctuary include mostly Tigers, Sloth bear, Flying Squirrels, Jackals, Four-horned Antelopes, Leopards, Chinkara, Black Buck, Jungle Cat, Barking Deer, Porcupine, Monkey, Bison, Striped Hyena, Wild Dogs, Chital, Sambar, Nilgai, Gaur, Muntjac, Wild Boar, Cobra, Python to name a few. The sanctuary also has a good no. of bird population of which the prominent are Parrots, Bulbul, White-rumped Vultures, Green Avadavat, Lesser Kestrels, Peafowl, Wood Peckers, Racket-tailed Drongos, Egrets, and Herons. The sanctuary is really a paradise for the wild life enthusiasts.

The flora of Barnawapara Wildlife Sanctuary mainly comprises of tropical dry deciduous forest with Teak, Sal, Bamboo and Terminalia being the prominent trees. Other major plants found in the sanctuary include Semal, Mahua, Ber and Tendu. The rich and lush vegetation cover supports a wide variety of wildlife in the sanctuary.

By Air

The nearest Airport is Swami Vivekananda Airport, located in Raipur from Barnawapara, roughly 100 Kms from the place. It is connected to various cities of India.

By Train

The nearest Railway station is Mahasamund Railway Station from Barnawapara, roughly 60 Kms from the town. There is also an availability of direct trains from different parts of the country to Mahasamund.

By Road

You have to reach Raipur (the capital city) first which is 103km from Baranawapara. Barnawapara is well connected with Raipur and is just three hour drive from the town. It is also linked with the PWD forest road, which links Barnawapara to Raipur through Patewa and Pithora on National Highway 6.
